چکیده

We have studied the effect of gaseous pollutants on fog droplet growth in heavily polluted air using a model that describes time-dependent sulfate production in the liquid phase and thermodynamical equilibrium between the droplets and the gas phase. Our research indicates that the oxidation of SO2 to sulfate has a significant effect on fog droplet growth especially when hygroscopic trace gases, for example HNO3 and NH3 are present. The increased sulfate production by dissolution of hygroscopic gases results from increased pH (caused by absorption of ammonia) and from the increased size of the fog/smog droplets. Our results indicate that unactivated fogs may become optically very thick when the droplet concentrations are on the order of several thousand per cubic centimeter of air.

Enhanced extinction of visible radiation due to hydrated aerosols in mist and fog

The study assesses the contribution of aerosols to the extinction of visible radiation in the mist–fog–mist cycle. Relative humidity is large in the mist–fog–mist cycle, and aerosols most efficient in interacting with visible radiation are hydrated and compose the accumulation mode. Measurements of the microphysical and optical properties of these hydrated aerosols with diameters larger than 0....

Analysis of Aerosol Radiative Forcing over Beijing under Different Air Quality Conditions Using Ground-Based Sun-Photometers between 2013 and 2015

Aerosol particles can strongly affect both air quality and the radiation budget of the atmosphere. Above Beijing, the capital city of China, large amounts of aerosols within the atmospheric column have caused the deterioration of local air quality and have influenced radiative forcings at both the top and the bottom of the atmosphere (BOA and TOA). Observations of aerosol radiative forcing and ...

Spindle trees (Euonymus japonica Thunb.) growing in a polluted environment are less sensitive to gamma irradiation

Background: Spindle trees (Euonymus japonica Thunb.) growing in an industrial complex area containing pollutants is chronically injured thus need to build up their resistance. Antioxidant enzymes and cell membrane stability have been widely used to differentiate stress tolerance. Materials and Methods: Leaves of spindle trees from a clean control area (Kijang) and an industrial area (Onsan) whe...

بررسی آلودگی هوای شهر تهران به روش وارونگی بحرانی هافتر

In issues related to air pollution, the thickness of the boundary layer is known as the depth of the mixed layer because the pollution on the ground surface is mixed in this entire layer through turbulence processes. In most cases, the boundary of the area is clearly visible on big industrial cities. The depth of the mixed layer has an important effect in the concentration of air pollution whic...

Sensitivity Analysis of a Mixed-Phase Chemical Mechanism using Automatic Differentiation

A mixed-phase chemistry box model is applied to study heterogeneous chemistry and its effect on tropospheric gas-phase chemistry, particularly on photochemical production of O3 and photochemical indicators for O3-NOx-hydrocarbon sensitivity, under a variety of atmospheric conditions ranging from remote marine to heavily-polluted atmospheres. A subsequent sensitivity analysis of the mixed-phase ...
